Funny how life sneaks up on you. One minute you’re the kid and the next you’re the geezer with a grandson. This happened to Louise and me a little over four years ago and, as I hope all grandparents feel, it’s been a blessing. He had me when he made his appearance via C-section with a beguiling smile and a full head of hair.

We have two daughters and I grew up in a family with three sisters so I’ve had only intermittent exposure to little boys. I delight in my time with him but am in awe of his limitless energy and non-stop activity. He was careening down our steep driveway on a two-wheeled scooter at age three and having just turned four is seeing no challenge from handling a bike (without training wheels).

As a former boy myself, remembering my likes and dislikes, I am fascinated to watch him evolve his personality, habits, and skills/talents. He is generally buoyant and clearly enjoying life. His passion for physical activity is unmistakable and his coordination and balance suggest successful participation in organized sports down the line. No question about this aspect of his future.

My wife and I, together with his mother—our daughter—are now increasing our attention and focusing our thoughts to his mental and educational development. Mom reads to him nightly and we encourage curiosity and learning about our desert environment and fauna. I expect great things as he matures with all the support and encouragement we can provide.

Our admiration for his personality and potential seem to be shared with the staff of his daycare place, reinforcing our belief that our grandson is special.
